Landmark Forum makes you think

Which is more satisfying, ‘Giving or receiving’? This depends on the situation. However, one must say that being able to give something is always a more satisfying feeling than giving. Secondly, it depends on how much you give. Giving can give you an exhilarating feeling. It does not come on its own. One is born with this trait. It is difficult to learn something that one is not accustomed to their nature. Landmark Forum tries to drive this point home using some beautiful examples. We shall see some of them here.

There was a small boy who approached an ice cream parlor with the intention of having a Sundae. The parlor was crowded and many people were waiting for their chance to sit. The boy stood patiently in the queue. When his turn came to have a seat, he proceeded to do so. The waitress was working since morning. She was not is a very good mood. She asked the boy for his order.

He asked her, “What is the cost of a Sundae?” She said that a Sundae costs 50 cents. The boy started counting his coins. The other people were getting impatient. The boy went about with his job calmly and found out that he does not have enough. He then asked for the price of a plain ice cream. She was getting impatient, but she replied that it costs 35 cents. The boy ordered for the plain ice cream. She went about murmuring that people do not have enough money but still harbor great dreams.

She placed the ice cream on his table. The boy had his fill, kept the tip and walked off after paying the bill. The waitress started weeping on seeing what the boy had left behind. He left behind everything he had, 15 cents. The boy could have very well had his Sundae. There is no rule that says it is mandatory to tip the waitress. The boy could have had his Sundae and paid for the same without having to worry about tipping her. She cried because the little boy made the sacrifice of settling for the plain ice cream just to be able to tip her.

What is the moral of the story? People might argue that the waitresses do not need tips as they are paid to serve people. That is not our topic of discussion. Our discussion is about the joy the boy got on giving the tip. It is more commendable because the boy gave everything he had.

Now, we come to the statement that the satisfaction depends on how much you give. If a millionaire leaves a tip of $1000 and a poor woman $5 out of her meager salary, which one is more valuable? The second one is more valuable because the $5 might be the only money left with the woman. She has given more than what the millionaire has given. The quality of her donation is better.
